Search and Recovery Diver
Turn “somewhere down there” into a plan—and bring it back up.
Have you ever dropped something in the water? Or spotted something that made you think, “I bet there’s more around here if I knew how to look”? The PADI Search and Recovery Diver Specialty is all about learning effective ways to find objects underwater and bring them to the surface. Small, large, or just awkward, there’s a method for it—and it’s a blast to practice.
At Indy Scuba, we love this specialty because it takes skills you already use on every dive—buoyancy, navigation, teamwork, and calm problem‑solving—and gives you a purpose-driven way to apply them.
The Fun Part
Search diving feels like a real mission. You’ll learn how to approach a problem underwater with a clear objective, a workable plan, and a pattern that actually covers the area you think it covers (instead of “swimming around and hoping”).
And yes—there’s real satisfaction in doing it right: setting up a search, staying organized, communicating with your buddy, and then finally seeing the target appear out of the bottom silt exactly where your plan said it should be.

What You Learn
The heart of this course is learning how to organize a search and carry it out effectively in a range of conditions. You’ll build skills that help you:
- Plan a search so it’s systematic, efficient, and repeatable
- Use proven search patterns to cover an area confidently
- Tie knots that make sense for underwater work and controlled lifting
- Think through basic “what could go wrong?” scenarios before you get in the water
You don’t have to be a “gearhead” to love this specialty—but if you enjoy dialing in details and seeing a plan succeed, you’ll feel right at home.
The Scuba Gear You Use
Search and recovery can involve equipment beyond a typical fun-dive setup. We’ll talk through what’s commonly used and why—so you understand what each piece does and how it supports the plan.
Because every recovery is a little different, we keep the focus on making smart choices for the object and the environment rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.
The Learning Materials You Need
You’ll prepare with the Search and Recovery crewpak (DVD and manual), which includes everything needed to get ready for the PADI Search and Recovery Specialty course. The manual includes a search pattern reference guide, knot‑tying diagrams, and an overview of how to organize a search. The DVD adds helpful visuals on performing search patterns and how to plan a search in a variety of conditions.
If you like having a clear reference you can return to later (especially for knots and patterns), you’ll appreciate these materials.
Prerequisites
This is a specialty for certified divers who want to add practical search skills to their toolbox. Prerequisites can vary by training pathway and standards—if you’re not sure whether you’re ready, just reach out and we’ll help you figure out the best next step.
